Camp to Belong Maine. Where do I begin? I can begin by thanking my friend David for inviting me along for the ride. Camp to Belong Maine is a week-long camp that gives siblings affected by the foster care system the 'right to reunite.' After a decade of typically being the sole photographer, I joined him, alongside a group of dedicated individuals to giving these kids a memorable week. I want to thank them for all they've done year over year, and am glad to be a part of their family for years to come.
I had never worked closely with kids, and did not know what to expect or how I would handle it. I surprised myself in the best way. During the week I witnessed a variety of events and grew close with several of the campers, both knowingly and unknowingly. They appreciate so much more what some of us may take for granted, spending time with family. These kids want what we all do, to be seen, heard, loved, to feel safe, to be accepted for who they are and be unapologetically themselves. Regardless of the aching knowledge that they would be separated again at the end of the week, they were happy. They did not allow the bad things in life to get in the way of their happiness.
The photo above was taken by one of the younger campers who had an incredible personality and creative spark. I can't imagine what kind of things they will be accomplishing in 10 years.
I was unaware of the impact I was having on these kids until I was swarmed into a group hug while crying as they sent me off with their camp chant on my last night. And more importantly, the impact they made on me.
I have been further inspired. I want to do more and will. One week is simply not enough to help and be there for kids like them.
So call your brother. Text your sister. Ask your mother out for coffee. Take your father to lunch. Our time is short, don't let them slip away.
